Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a holistic modality in which ketamine is used complementary to psychotherapy, helping individuals to experience more frequent breakthroughs and sustained improvement in symptoms. As your therapist, I will facilitate the psychotherapy portion of the experience, while the referring clinical team supports your medical needs. This includes eligibility, developing a treatment plan, prescribing the medicine, and monitoring outcomes.
What is ketamine?
Ketamine is a legal, safe and effective treatment for mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance abuse, existential issues, and attachment injury when combined with psychotherapy. Ketamine rapidly improves mood within hours lasting up to 2 weeks. It works by blocking NMDA receptors and stimulating AMPA receptors, helping to form new synaptic connections and boosting neural circuits regulating stress and mood. Ketamine's capacity to enhance neuroplasticity contributes to symptom relief.
Ketamine can be administered in a variety of ways, including IV infusion, IM injection, via nasal spray and sublingual lozenges, which is what I offer via prescriber.
What does ketamine feel like and what are the benefits?
Like other psychedelics, ketamine facilitates access to the unconscious - the beliefs, memories, and emotions we are generally not aware of day to day, but have tremendous influence over the ways we behave, feel, and make sense of our experiences. My therapeutic approach always has the aim of bringing more of this unconscious material into awareness, where it can be understood, re-evaluated, even released. Ketamine amplifies the ability of therapy to open the doors of the unconscious and allow the stuck, repressed parts of us start to move. This process is crucial to deep psychological healing, but can feel intense or overwhelming while passing through. This is why I believe it is so important to have a skilled therapist at hand to support you in feeling safe, open, and curious during and after the ketamine experience.
The immediate effects of ketamine, often described as pleasant, can last for approximately 45 minutes. Many feel some version of being “out of body”, and experience shifts in perception of both inner and outer worlds. Motor and verbal abilities will be reduced, so you’ll be lying down in a comfortable position during the experience. Once the initial effects have subsided, you may still feel open and peaceful, and may take the remainder of the time to process and discuss the experience. Studies have shown that the benefits to mood, and the window of neurological growth, can last up to 2 weeks after the ketamine experience.

My KAP Process:
Initial Consultation: Your ketamine journey starts with a free 15 minute exploration call. We'll discuss the factors bringing you to KAP, prior experience with psychotherapy and psychedelics, as well as any initial questions or concerns. Together, we'll discuss whether KAP is the right path for you at this time.
Evaluation/Intake Session: Following our consultation, we'll plan an evaluation/intake to assess your psychological suitability for KAP. This step helps determine if KAP aligns with your therapeutic needs. We’ll discuss your current experiences and review your personal history to obtain a comprehensive picture.
Referral to Prescribing Partner: Upon completing the evaluation/intake, you'll be referred to my prescribing partner - a medical team specializing in ketamine's clinical application. During your intake appointment, the prescriber will assess your physiological suitability for KAP. If approved, they prescribe the necessary quantity of ketamine, delivered with your welcome kit.
Preparation Sessions: Next, we'll set the initial prep session, with the possibility of additional sessions based on need and comfort. During prep, we'll discuss the process, set expectations, establish intentions, foster trust, and address concerns.
Ketamine Sessions: After completing the preparation sessions, you’ll schedule your ketamine sessions. These sessions are approximately 2 hours long, providing time for relaxation, connection, creating intentional space, experiencing an unhurried journey, and allowing for a debrief before you depart. The number of ketamine sessions will be tailored to your healing needs and personal preferences. As you progress further, you'll have the freedom to independently schedule your medicine sessions, (along with a trusted sitter), and rejoin me for your integration sessions as needed.
Integration Sessions: Following your ketamine sessions, you’ll schedule integration sessions. These sessions typically occur 2-5 days after the medicine sessions - the unfolding phase, a time for gaining valuable insights. In these sessions, you'll have the opportunity to reflect on and process your experiences.
Continuation and Flexibility: This cycle continues until your KAP experience is complete. The structure is somewhat flexible, with consideration for your individual needs and preferences in the process. The medical team and I will keep an eye on your progress to ensure that we're always caring for you wellbeing.

The cost of healthcare services, including ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, can vary significantly from one region or country to another. Areas with a higher cost of living may generally have higher healthcare costs.
Professional Qualifications:
The qualifications and expertise of the healthcare professionals administering ketamine-assisted psychotherapy can influence the cost. Treatment provided by experienced and well-trained professionals may be priced differently than services offered by less experienced practitioners.
Treatment Setting:
The setting in which KAP is provided can affect the cost. For example, treatment in a clinic or medical office may have different associated costs than treatment in a specialized ketamine clinic.
Route of Administration:
Intramuscular (IM) Ketamine:
IM ketamine is typically administered as an injection into the muscle. The cost may include the medication itself, the healthcare professional's fees, and any associated medical monitoring. The overall cost for IM ketamine may vary based on geographical location, the specific clinic or healthcare provider, and the dosage administered.
Intravenous (IV) Ketamine:
IV ketamine involves the administration of the drug through a vein. This route is often used in medical settings, such as hospitals or clinics. IV ketamine sessions may be more expensive than other routes due to the need for medical supervision, equipment, and potentially longer treatment times.
Sublingual Ketamine:
Sublingual administration involves placing the ketamine medication under the tongue for absorption. This method is often used in certain therapeutic settings. The cost of sublingual ketamine may include the medication, the healthcare provider's fees, and any additional services provided during the session.
Intranasal (nasal spray):
The cost considerations for these routes may differ based on the method's complexity, the need for specialized equipment, and the healthcare professional's expertise.
Treatment Packages:
Some clinics or healthcare providers may offer treatment packages that include a series of sessions at a set price. These packages may also include preparatory and integration sessions.
Number of Sessions:
The overall cost will also depend on the number of sessions recommended for the individual's treatment plan. Some individuals may respond well to a limited number of sessions, while others may require more extensive treatment.
Booster Sessions:
If booster sessions are recommended as part of the treatment plan, they may incur additional costs.
Additional Services:
Some providers may include additional services such as preparatory sessions, integration sessions, and follow-up assessments as part of the overall treatment package, potentially affecting the cost.
Insurance Coverage:
At this time ketamine-assisted psychotherapy may not be covered by health insurance for certain conditions. However, this landscape is evolving, and insurance coverage may change over time. It's advisable for individuals to check with their insurance providers to understand coverage options.
Due to the evolving nature of ketamine-assisted psychotherapy and its status within the healthcare system, it's essential for individuals to inquire about specific costs with the healthcare providers or clinics offering the service. Additionally, individuals should consider discussing potential financing options or payment plans, if available.
It's important to note that, as of my last update, ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is primarily being explored as a treatment for certain mental health conditions, and its availability may vary by location. Individuals interested in this therapy should seek services from qualified and reputable healthcare professionals or clinics and discuss all relevant aspects, including costs, prior to initiating treatment.

The length and time frame of ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) can vary depending on the therapeutic protocol, the specific condition being treated, and the individual's response to the treatment. Here are some general considerations:
Session Duration:
KAP sessions typically last longer than traditional psychotherapy sessions. Sessions can range from 60 to 120 minutes or more. The extended time allows for both the administration of the ketamine and the integration of the experience within the psychotherapeutic context.
Number of Sessions:
The number of sessions can vary widely. Some individuals may experience benefits after a single session, while others may undergo a series of sessions spaced over several weeks. The exact number of sessions is often determined based on the treatment goals, the severity of the condition, and the individual's response to the treatment.
Frequency of Sessions:
The frequency of KAP sessions can vary. In some protocols, individuals may have sessions once a week for a certain period, while others may have sessions more or less frequently. The frequency is often determined based on the treatment plan and the therapeutic goals.
Integration and Follow-Up:
Integration sessions, where individuals discuss and process their experiences, are often an essential part of KAP. These sessions help individuals integrate insights gained during the ketamine experience into their daily lives. Follow-up sessions may also be scheduled to monitor progress and adjust the treatment plan if necessary.
Booster Sessions:
Some individuals may benefit from booster sessions to maintain the therapeutic effects over time. The need for booster sessions can depend on the nature of the condition being treated and the individual's response to the initial sessions.
Preparation and Assessment:
Before starting KAP, individuals typically undergo a thorough assessment to determine their suitability for the treatment. Preparation sessions may also be conducted to discuss expectations, goals, and potential challenges.
It's crucial to emphasize that the use of ketamine in a therapeutic context is a developing field, and guidelines may vary. The treatment is typically administered by trained and qualified professionals, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, or other mental health practitioners. Additionally, regulations and legal considerations surrounding the use of ketamine in therapy may differ by region.
Individuals considering ketamine-assisted psychotherapy should consult with a qualified healthcare provider to discuss their specific situation, understand the potential risks and benefits, and ensure that the treatment is conducted in a safe and supportive environment.
